Promoting Permanence
The Porch Light Project strives to assure that a safe and loving family becomes a reality for every child. Birth families are where children belong, but when children can’t be made safe in their homes, an alternate permanent family becomes what they need. For most of us, our sense of belonging and security is grounded in our families. Unfortunately, too many children in Pennsylvania live in a family environment that threatens their safety and well-being. Our challenge is to intervene with families who do not keep their children safe, and strengthen their capacity to do so. We do this when families are in crisis or, preferably, before crisis occurs, and work to promote strategies that keep children safe and in their own homes. In instances when children cannot be made safe in their own homes, the complexity of the child welfare system’s mission is compounded when child removal is deemed necessary. Promoting permanence – building or re-building a birth family’s capacity to safely care for its own, or assuring another permanent family – requires a steadfast commitment to enacting effective public policies, overcoming challenges and implementing strategies that improve outcomes. |
