Business is the backbone of any community, but children are its heart. They are the reason that we build schools and homes. Extensive long-term research clearly shows that early childhood nurturing and learning definitely affects brain development in very young children. If an opportunity for development of a young child's brain is missed, lifelong disadvantages are unavoidable.

Pennsylvania can be a more prosperous state and a more attractive home for new businesses if we offer parents an opportunity to have greater support for their young children. The development of the next generation of productive employees will result if we provide children appropriate development opportunities in prekindergarten programs, kindergarten classrooms, and in elementary classes committed to reading and math proficiency.

The state of Pennsylvania can enhance our future by devoting adequate resources, funds, energy, and talents to a childhood education policy that gives children a learning lift for the youngest among us.
