What is PA-CAN?
Advocacy 101: What is it?
An effective advocate is someone with a passion for an idea, coupled
with a clear understanding of the process needed to implement changes.
Advocacy fuels the legislative process at the state and national
levels. Businesses and interest groups have their advocates, protecting
their stakes in the lawmaking process, but who protects and promotes
the interest of children? Children do no have a natural voice. They
don't vote or make campaign contributions - the most effective tools
for winning influence in the lawmaking process - so they need advocates
speaking for them with credible, persuasive voices. If children
are nurtured, educated, and afforded opportunities to succeed, they
accumulate the potential to grow into responsible citizens, contributing
their own voices and talents to a thriving society.
Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children is Pennsylvania's voice for
kids, and the Pennsylvania Children's Advocacy Network is its instrument
for citizens who want to take action. Through PA-CAN, Pennsylvanians
can sharpen their effectiveness at convincing lawmakers that investing
in long-term solutions is better than spending on short-term crisis
and failure.
What is the Pennsylvania Children's Advocacy Network (PA-CAN)?
The Pennsylvania Children's Advocacy Network organizes Pennsylvanians who are concerned about children's issues and willing to act on their behalf. Using electronic capabilities to recruit members from its Web site and unite them in a virtual network, PPC keeps PA-CAN members informed on policymaking, communications, and community mobilizing. With that information, PA-CAN members are encouraged and empowered to raise their voices in support of children in the public policy arena.
The goals and activities of PA-CAN
PPC supports PA-CAN members by:
- Sharing PPC's legislative agenda and providing regular policy
updates.
- Issuing instructions for contacting lawmakers, also known
as action alerts, and other timely activities that can help
spark action at critical times.
- Sharing data on the status of children in Pennsylvania communities.
When called upon, PA-CAN members are expected to:
- Contact lawmakers with their stand - sculpted by PPC - on
current policy proposals affecting children's well-being.
- Share materials and the call to action with other friends
and colleagues.
- Participate in appropriate media activities.
