The Joan Benso Professional Development Fund Scholarship
…dedicated to strengthening child advocacy in Pennsylvania through strong leaders
PPC’s success has been driven by the vision, dedication and tireless work of our Board of Directors, financial supporters, advocacy partners and staff. And for all but the first few years of PPC’s impressive history, our organization was led by Joan Benso, who retired in 2018 after decades of service.
Under Joan’s leadership the lives of children in Pennsylvania were vastly improved as doors were opened for them to access quality and affordable health care and high-quality early childhood programs. She worked with the administrations of numerous governors, and members of the General Assembly and their staff to prioritize public education for children in Pennsylvania’s public schools and to ensure foster youth and children in the child welfare system not only have a voice, but that their voices were heard.
Joan is a true champion for children and thousands of children across the Commonwealth continue to benefit from her remarkable work.
In honor of Joan’s long list of achievements, the Board of Directors is pleased to announce a scholarship program created in her honor, the Joan Benso Professional Development Fund (JBF). The purpose of the fund is to promote professional development for emerging child advocates throughout Pennsylvania by providing one-time scholarship opportunities to qualified individuals.
JBF scholarships will support nonprofit leaders in Pennsylvania’s child-serving fields to enhance their management and leadership skills. Most nonprofit leaders have advanced their careers through their expertise in human services and their passion for the mission of their organization, and while leaders are proficient in the technical aspects of the agencies they serve, some may lack the broader leadership skills needed to assure the future viability of their organizations.
PPC’s Board of Directors and staff deeply appreciate the monetary contributions of the following organizations that have made this scholarship fund possible:
- The Grable Foundation
- The Heinz Endowments
- William Penn Foundation
