New child welfare report shows a rise in neglect and abuse across PA

The annual State of Child Welfare report was released on Wednesday, highlighting the number of gaps that exist in the child welfare system.

The report shows reports of child abuse and neglect are going up.

In 2022, there were 1,000 more child abuse or child protective services (CPS) compared to 2021. In 2022 there were 39,093 CPS reports and 38,013 in 2021.

The report shows there were over 3,500 general protective services (GPS), which includes neglect or other problems that threaten a child’s safety. In 2022, there were 165,295 GPS reports compared to 161,709 in 2021.
